Class, Course vs. Course Catalog

Definition of terms

A course is what is offered during an entire semester. A class is a particular teaching session of an *offered course. A course catalog is an item that a course can be generated from.

The course catalog is needed because the same courses can be offered every semester, and yet they are different: possibly different teacher, tuition, and definitely class schedules. By pulling all these seldom changed property into a course catalog, we can create new course out of a course catalog, and change the other properties later.

A course can only be created from a course catalog. And only one * course* can be generated from any one course catalog. Should there be any need for the same courses offered twice in a semester, the solution is to create a separate catalog.

Please note, when the software creates a course, it does not have much information to work with. Typically, we set the time to 2:00 - 3:50PM for language, 4:00 - 4:50PM for activity classes.

Same is for the tuition and early registration discount, which are pulled from the configurations keys:

  • tuition.activity
  • tuition.discount.activity
  • tuition.language
  • tuition.discount.language

The same setting is also used when doing the Copy Courses, which copy the setting offered from one semester to another.
